The recently passed telecommunications law allows for a substantial reorganization of
the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) and a redirection of the
mission and responsibilities of the Ministry of Post and Communications. The
updated law reflects the convergence of technologies and services currently under
way in the telecommunications field, with the Ministry’s focus being on the
information technology and telecommunications sectors. The new law establishes a
full-time board of commissioners and expands the responsibilities of the TRC to
include administration of a universal service fund and stronger overall regulatory
oversight of the telecommunications sector
