Mapping of irrigated areas and estimation of respective water consumption were carried out for the two study areas of Mafraq governorate and Azraq district of Jordan under the Water Innovation Technologies (WIT) Project. Satellite images, weather data, Geographic Information System (GIS) maps and secondary data from published reports on groundwater safe yield and volumes abstracted, were used for the analysis. The irrigated areas had been mapped in 2005,
2010 and 2014 to understand the historical evolution of irrigation development in the two study areas.
The general objective of this work is to prepare maps for irrigated areas and their water consumption in selected areas, Azraq and Mafraq, for 2005, 2010 and 2014. The deliverables of the project are:
-Actual evapotranspiration maps (ETa) (30x30, meters) for 2005, 2010 and 2014 for the
study area.
-Irrigated area maps for 2005, 2010 and 2014.
-Quantification of areas under irrigation, based on 30x30 pixels.
-Quantification of blue and green water consumption in the irrigated areas.
