Waste Picker Certificate Completion Report

The Recycling in Jordan Activity (the Activity) is a multi-year activity funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The Activity is partnering with the Ministry of Environment (MOENV), the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM), and private sector recycling companies to increase the commercial sector’s utilization of recycling services in Amman.
In its first year, the Activity designed the Waste Picker Training and Certification Program with support from Chemonics Egypt and implemented in partnership with the Jordan Environment Society (JES). It was created as a tool to increase the capacity and willingness of the informal waste pickers to be integrated into the formal municipal waste collection system in Amman. Improving the capacity and access of informal waste pickers will lead to a significant increase in the quantity and volume of recyclable materials transited across the value chains of Amman’s recycling sector.
The Activity, in collaboration with JES, conducted 13 separate training cohorts in FY2022, engaging 340 male and female informal waste pickers, with a total of 25 hours of training per cohort.
